Following Emma's
1899 divorce from Jakob (who is rumoured to have moved to the
Rheinland), the children were placed as 'verdingsbuben'
(servant-boys) with seperate Rütschelen families, paid for by
the Gemeinde (community) - most had a wretched life, treated more
as slaves than part of the family.
