Four days walking around the hills and lakes around Sawrey in Cumbria.

My base was the Sawrey Hotel in Sawrey (where else), a great little Inn providing a massive five course evening meal and massive breakfasts at very reasonable room rates - highly recommended if you ever need a break in the area. Sawrey is on the west shore of Windemere, and probably most famous for Hill Top - the home of Beatrix Potter, although I still haven't been in there - it was closed on the Thursday when I went to look round ( so check for openeing times if you intend to drop in there). |
| Walking is one of life's finest pleasures, and the Lake District is probably one of the best places to indulge in the habit. For a change the weather during my short break was excellent, and armed with hearty packed lunches from the Sawrey Hotel I enjoyed a few easy, but breathtaking, walks around Red Screes (above Ambleside), The Langdale Pikes (above New Dungeon Gill), and around the villages of Hawkshead and Ambleside. | ![]() |

Bridge House in Ambleside is probably the most photographed place there (so it's here too), but there's plenty more to do and see there - great pubs, plenty of local walks, and much shopping - a visit to Ambleside wouldn't be complete without visiting Gaynor Sports, and buying vast quantities of chocolate! |
